Display - LG.Philips to Start 7G Mass Production in 1H 2006

South Korean TFT LCD (Thin-Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) panel maker LG.Philips has scheduled the mass production of its seventh generation plant for the first half of 2006. The plant, to be situated in the Paju Display Cluster, north of Seoul, will be constructed on capital of 5.3 trillion KRW (US$5.1 billion; US$1=1,048.3 KRW). Initial monthly input volume set at 45,000 substrates, and will be edged up to a full monthly capacity of 90,000 inputs.

 

Glass substrates 1,950 millimeters by 2,250 millimeters in dimension will be adopted to produce 42" and 47" wide TFT LCD panels in addition to large flat TV and monitor displays of other sizes.

 

The company is drafting plans to set up a 1.7 million square meter LG.Philips LCD Paju LCD complex in the Paju Display Cluster. A total of 25 trillion KRW (US$23.9 billion) will be invested into the complex over a course of ten years.

 

S-LCD, a joint venture between Samsung Electronics and Sony, will be launching the mass production of large LCD panels in its seventh generation plant by the first half of 2005. The seventh generation production line, first in the world, is designed to process a monthly input of 60,000 substrates. Taiwanese makers Chi Mei and AUO also have plans to start operation of new plants in 2005.
